At the end of the 19th century, the chemist Constantin Fahlberg discovered the manufacturing process for saccharin. A substance was still stuck to his fingers from experimenting in the lab, making his bread taste sweet, and he determined which substance it was. Together with his cousin, based in Magdeburg, he opened the world’s first sweetener factory. Since the sugar factory sensed a major competitor, saccharin was gradually banned. However, the product was revived during the First World War because sugar was becoming scarce. With the transition to the Second World War, sweeteners became a product of exchange and trade and thus a resource of society.
“click”. Sophia smiled. “click”. She smiled contentedly and pushed the sweetener dispenser aside. It had become a nice morning ritual for her to drink her coffee on the balcony with sweetener. Sonja looked at her in amazement: “You drink your coffee with sweetener? I only know that from my grandma! Does that taste good?”. Sophia grinned and pushed the Sucofin bottle towards Sonja. Expectantly, Sonja clicked the Sucofin into her coffee. She looked at Sophia enthusiastically and said with a laugh: “My grandmother would now say: the tried and tested would be the longest”.
